Windmill lights up Windrush Square
If you go down to Windrush Square today – or any day until Boxing Day – you’re sure of a big surprise.
Magdalen Rubalcava of the Friends of Windmill Gardens has worked tirelessly over the past month with sponsors Veolia and Emerson to erect a superb illuminated windmill, along with two reindeer, in Windrush Square, Brixton. The reindeer are called Hector and Jeff, after two Veolia staff who worked for many years on maintaining Windmill Gardens.
The lights were switched on last Friday, with a children’s choir from Corpus Christi primary school singing carols next to it, with Lambeth Mayor Councillor Clive Bennett and local celebrity Levi Roots in attendance.
The aim of the lights is to draw publicity to our campaign to raise £20,000 to get Brixton Windmill grinding flour again by its 200th birthday in 2016.
We would like to thank Veolia and Emerson for their generous sponsorship, and Lambeth Council for its help and co-operation.
