Tales from the Mills’ and other stories

Friends Richard Santhiri, Penny Steele and Shaun Wilson recently attended the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) Mills Section Spring meeting. The theme was ‘Tales from the Mills’, with reports from recently restored mills, lively debate on mill repair philosophy and news of mills from around the country.

There was an inspiring presentation from Holgate Windmill, York, where flour milling has begun in the recently restored windmill, and a report from Marsh Mill, Thornton-Cleveleys, a windmill now part of a craft village and shopping centre on the Lancashire coast, about problems with maintenance and water ingress, a not uncommon problem in tower mills. Also, the SPAB Mills Section and the Mills Archive Trust have launched a project called ‘Tales from the Mill‘ to collect people’s memories of mills and milling.

A full report of the meeting can be found in the latest issue of the SPAB Mills Section’s magazine, ‘Mill News’ (issue no. 135, April 2013) which is now online.

You can support the SPAB Mills Section by becoming a member. As well as producing the quarterly magazine, the Mill Section gives invaluable advice to mills and organises courses, National Mills Weekend, tours of mills and day-long meetings twice a year which are always interesting and informative.
