Refurbishment of sails

restoration of the brixton windmill

If you have visited Windmill Gardens since June you will have noticed that the sweeps (sails) are missing.

Our millwright, Paul Sellwood and his team from Owlsworth IJP, performed the delicate task of removing Brixton Windmill’s sails for repair and repainting.

The windmill looks rather sad and bare without the sails, but they are definitely in need of some TLC, as they haven’t been repainted since the windmill was restored in 2011. We hope they will be back in a couple of months.

Other work being carried out over the summer includes improving drainage and ventilation, and installing a sack hoist to allow our volunteer millers to move grain more easily between the different floors of the windmill.
