Guided Walk of Brixton Hill (Sundays on Open Weekends)
This walk is gently paced, covers about 1.5 miles in total, and provides an opportunity to explore the area where John Ashby built his windmill in 1816, and how other important developments at that time shaped this part of Brixton.
The walk starts from Brixton Windmill promptly at 1pm and last about 1.5 hours.
The walk follows a once-rural street pattern and traces the 19th-century development of the area’s farmland for housing, prison and clean water supply. You will hear tales of prisoners, discover how trams scaled Brixton Hill and learn why the Telegraph pub was so named. You can spot a Tuscan oil jar shop sign, a rare pillar box and one of London’s oldest cinemas.
You will return in time to visit the windmill itself (if you intend to book a full tour of the windmill afterwards we recommend booking for 3pm or later). Our shop and cafe are also open on your return.
About your guide
The Brixton Hill walk is guided by London Blue Badge Guide Liz du Parcq. Liz is a London Blue Badge Tourist Guide who has lived in Lambeth since 1970, was an elected Lambeth councillor for our local ward from 1974 until 1982, and is a former trustee of the Friends of Windmill Gardens.
History, Mystery & Ministry – A Walk from the Windmill to Windrush Square (Selected Saturdays)
If you are interested in local Brixton history across 2000 years join Lambeth Tour Guide Diana on this 1.5 hour walk around approximately 1.5 miles of Brixton.
The walk starts at Brixton Windmill, then follows part of the Roman Road and follows some of the course of the Effra River. We will talk of monarchs, authors, influencers and places of worship. There is even an unsolved murder. Brixton is the centre of Lambeth and Windrush Square its beating heart.
