Guided walk of Brixton Hill

£12.00 (or £6.00 for concessions)

Our popular walks in the Brixton Hill area are guided by London Blue Badge Guide Liz du Parcq. They are gently paced, cover about 1.5 miles, and provide an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the area where the windmill was built in 1816, and how other important developments at that time have shaped this part of Brixton.

The walk follows a once-rural street pattern and traces the 19th-century development of the area’s farmland for housing, prison and clean water supply. You will hear tales of prisoners, discover how trams scaled Brixton Hill and learn why the Telegraph pub was so named. You can spot a Tuscan oil jar shop sign, a rare pillar box and one of London’s oldest cinemas.

You will return in time to visit the windmill itself (if you intend to book a tour of the windmill afterwards then we recommend booking for 3pm or later). You will also have time to see our exhibition, sample our café and have chance to buy Brixton Windmill flour, preserves made from local produce and our Windmill-themed products.

The charge of £12, or £6 for concessions (under 16s free), all supports Brixton Windmill.

The walk starts from Brixton Windmill at 1pm and lasts about 1.5 hours depending on the walking speed of the group and the questions that come up. Please arrive at 12.45pm for a prompt start.

Liz du Parcq is a London Blue Badge Tourist Guide who has lived in Lambeth since 1970, was an elected Lambeth councillor for our local ward from 1974 until 1982, and is a trustee of the Friends of Windmill Gardens.
