Growing wheat in Lambeth parks

Wheat planted at Ruskin Park

The Friends have been awarded a small grant to help increase the number of parks in Lambeth where heritage wheat is grown. Working in partnership with Brockwell Bake, among others, the aim is to harvest enough grain this September to grind at our Harvest Festival – producing flour that is grown and milled in Brixton!

So far a large patch of winter wheat has been sown in Ruskin Park. It is doing well. An area has been identified in Agnes Riley Park to grow spring wheat, and their Friends group are working with their Lambeth parks officer to get that sown in the next month.?

In Windmill Gardens our active Parks Group are holding a workshop at 1pm on Saturday 19 March to dig in the green manure we grew over the winter so that the ground is enriched and ready to be sown with April bearded spring wheat.? So if you enjoy gardening please get in touch by emailing info@brixtonwindmill.org.uk and putting Parks Workshop in the subject line to tell us you will be coming on 19 March.
