Football Festival 2012

Last Saturday morning, nine teams turned up for the five-a-side football festival in Windmill Gardens. They included teams from Blenheim Gardens Estate, Roupell Estate, Axtell Football Club (based near Acre Lane),the Portuguese Cultural Football Club and Christchurch School. Despite the rain, quite a few parents and supporters came along as well.

Volunteers from the Friends of Windmill Gardens got very wet raking the grass off the pitches and then helping all morning with refreshments and keeping the One O’Clock Club free from mud and grass.

Our resident photographer Owen Llewellyn covered all the games and looked very impressive in his role of sports photographer – you can see more photos from the day here.

Dave Kiobel from Lambeth Council’s sports team and Tom Lowndes, the volunteer who came forward to help us organise the event, handled it all very professionally. Every participant got a windmill football badge and a certificate, and the winners in the under-12s and under-16s groups got medals.

The team leaders said they enjoyed the event and would come again next year.

A good day in the park, which looked very busy!
