Engine of terror
Jean Kerrigan, Chair of the Friends of Windmill Gardens, featured in a programme about Brixton Prison on BBC Radio 4 last Wednesday.
The programme, Engine of Terror, was about the prison treadmill, which prisoners were required to work to grind flour. Jean explains that William Cubitt, who invented the treadmill, also invented the self-regulating spring or patent sails on the windmill.
If you missed the programme, you can still listen to it on iPlayer for the next four days. The second programme in the series, The Experiment, will be broadcast on Wednesday 19 June at 11am.
