Wheat growing in Ruskin Park
The Friends of Windmill Gardens are collaborating with the Friends of Ruskin Park and the Brockwell Bake Association in a project to grow heritage wheat in Ruskin Park to be harvested in 2019.
The aim is that grain from this sowing will be milled at Brixton Windmill. Last year we collaborated in ploughing and sowing in the traditional way using shire horses. They proved very popular with local residents and school children!
This season some of the wheat growing site in Ruskin Park is being left fallow. Madeira wheat plus Miller’s Choice and Squarehead Masters winter wheats were sown early in November, along with lava beans, and some of the wheat is already showing.
Volunteers are needed on Saturday 1 December between 10am and 12.30pm to prepare another patch of ground ready to sow spring wheat. Make sure you are suitably dressed for some serious digging!
