Flour Milling day at Maud Foster Mill
Lisa Rigg, the Windmill’s Development and Education Officer, attended a flour milling training day organised by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings at Maud Foster Mill in Boston, Lincolnshire.
Thirteen people from around the UK attended this wonderful event in late September 2011. The day was delivered by James Waterfield, Mildred Cookson and Jonathan Cook. It focused on practical skills, including how to adjust the millstones to produce different qualities of flour, conditioning and dressing as well as how to identify good-quality milling wheat.
Lisa now knows what the Hagberg test is and how to measure a bushel! The highlights of the day were being able to tinker with a working windmill and play with a real sack hoist.
