Friends of Windmill Gardens are honoured and delighted that to have been shortlisted for the “Everyday History Heroes” award being run in partnership with Heritage Open Days and UK Family website Find my past.
Historian and broadcaster David Olusoga OBE has launched this major new public award inviting the nation to vote for their favourite hidden heritage gems across the country and we would very much appreciate support in the public vote.
Created by a partnership between Heritage Open Days and UK family history website, Findmypast, the ‘Everyday History Heroes’ award celebrates the historic and cultural sites that champion the stories of ordinary people – from nurses and miners to teachers, soldiers and changemakers. The award centres on the grassroots histories that often go untold: the communities who powered industries, stood up for their beliefs, and built modern Britain.
A treasured South London landmark, Brixton Windmill connects people with the history of the workers and families who once relied on it for their livelihoods. With various activities planned throughout the year such as bookable tours, demonstrations, baking and milling workshops and storytelling, volunteers create an impression of life at the mill, bringing the lives of millers, apprentices and bakers into vivid focus and keeping heritage skills alive.
John Licence Trustee at Brixton Windmill said: ’We’re delighted to be shortlisted for Everyday History Heroes and to share the stories of the workers, families and communities whose lives revolved around Brixton Windmill. We love helping our visitors experience a vital part of London’s social history and keep the tradition of a working mill alive.’
The public is now invited to vote for their favourite site, helping to crown England’s first-ever Everyday History Heroes. Voting is open until 31 August, with a national winner and seven regional winners to be announced on 10 September. Winners will receive a donation to help fund their community initiatives.
