Marvellous Milling Monday
It didn't rain. Our volunteer millers looked incredibly smart in their windmill-branded dungarees, and the electric millstones worked splendidly all afternoon. Even so, visitors' demand for the flour was so great that it was difficult to keep up!
Tours of the mill to see the flour being ground quickly booked up, but there was plenty of other stuff going on to keep visitors entertained. The No Frills Band were on top form with their irresistible folk music, and children's face painting was popular, as were the creative workshops run by Beth of Wild in the City. (Beth has also trained as a volunteer miller – you can read her account on her website.) And new Brixton Windmill merchandise lines were very popular, particularly the mugs.
The other highlight of the afternoon was the first Great Brixton Windmill Bake Off. Our very own Mary Berry (aka Richard Scroggs from the Old Post Office Bakery) led the judging panel, which also included Spyros Parissis of Parissi on Atlantic Road and Ciara O’Shea of Brixton Hill’s newest café, F. Mondays.
