This year, more than ever, we have all come to understand just how important it is to have a great park or green space on our doorstep. They have been a place to escape to, to meet friends in, to exercise in or simply to have a quiet moment in.
Thanks to the tireless work of our volunteers and parks staff, this year Windmill Gardens retained its Green Flag Award – the international quality mark for parks and green spaces – for the fifth year running, one of a record-breaking 2,228 parks and green spaces across the world.
As well as the opening of Brixton Windmill Centre this year, volunteers from the Friends of Windmill Gardens have worked hard with parks staff, Father Nature, and Good Gym Lambeth to improve the park and keep it looking its best so that people can continue to enjoy it during lockdown.
Now, to celebrate our country’s fantastic parks, the public is being asked to vote for their favourite award-winning parks.
You can find details of all the Green Flag Award winners at www.greenflagaward.org. To vote for Windmill Gardens, go to this page click the vote button. Once you’ve voted, why not encourage others to get involved too?
Voting is now open and closes on 25 November, with the top 10 winning sites announced in December.
Paul Todd, International Green Flag Award manager for Keep Britain Tidy, said: “This year, probably more than ever, we have all come to understand the importance of our precious parks and green spaces and to value those that have been a lifeline for us in difficult times.
“The People’s Choice Award is your chance to show how much your favourite park means to you. Make your voice heard and vote now.”
Jean Kerrigan, Chair of the Friends of Windmill Gardens, said: “Windmill Gardens is small compared with some of Lambeth’s other parks, but it’s a well used and well loved local space. The new Brixton Windmill Centre and the recently completed terraced garden are great assets for park users and local residents of all ages.”
