Repairs at Brixton Windmill to start soon

Getting the sail into position

Jean Kerrigan reports on repairs needed to grade II* listed Brixton Windmill

Lambeth Council are paying for repairs to address damp and water ingress in Brixton Windmill. A pre-start meeting will be held on 28 January between Darrenth Construction, Dannatt Johnson (architects), Lambeth Council and Nick Weedon, one of the trustees of the Friends of Windmill Gardens who is an architect specialising in restoring historic buildings.

Logan Construction SE Ltd, who are currently building the new education centre beside the windmill, will also be present.

The repairs include:

  • possible installation of a French drain at the rear of the windmill
  • improving ventilation on the ground and first (meal) floor
  • installing storage heating to run for two hours a day when temperatures drop
  • possible cap repairs.

This work is expected to last for six weeks.

At the same time Lambeth will install an electric sack hoist to help our volunteer millers to easily and quickly move 25kg sacks of grain to the upper floors.
