Superwoman visits Brixton Windmill

Jean Kerrigan reports on successful artistic activities at Art in the Park

We had another very good weekend at Brixton Windmill, with more than 100 visitors going on guided tours over the two days.

On Sunday the park was really busy, and it was great to see families enjoying picnics beside the windmill and adults as well as children taking part in Art in the Park. Their drawing and painting throughout the afternoon was encouraged and supported by local artist Kathy Hilton, producing some really accomplished drawings, acrylics and watercolours.

We were also very grateful to Morgan, a local graffiti artist. Helped by intrigued young boys from Blenheim Gardens Estate, he painted a fantastic image that features our windmill visited by Superwoman!

Other highly successful activities were T-shirt painting with Gill, mask-making with Amber and badge making with Penny.

All our volunteers worked really hard during the hot afternoon, and once again we must particularly thank our bakers and Shenan and Rosie, who supplied tea, coffee, juice and cakes all afternoon at the "windmill tearoom" – much appreciated by all our visitors.

We also had a local produce stall selling delicious home-made jam, and courgettes, beans and potatoes harvested that morning, plus lots of plants and herbs which were snapped up by visitors. This was a great event well organised by Annick and the Parks Group of the Friends of Windmill Gardens.

Our merchandising stall was selling our latest windmill pens as well as our new tote bags and our consistently best-selling postcards and books about the Ashby family of millers who worked the windmill on and off from 1817 to 1934.

Visitors were full of praise for our hard-working team of guides and showed their appreciation by writing great comments in our visitors' book and making some very generous donations.
