Growing heritage wheat in Ruskin Park

Image: Ann Bodkin

The Friends of Windmill Gardens have teamed up with the Friends of Ruskin Park and Brockwell Bake to grow a patch of heritage wheat that can be ground at the windmill.

Last Saturday a group of dedicated volunteers struggled with the wet and sticky ground, as the drive cogs on drill from front wheel to seed feed quickly clogged up with mud. Creating drill lines with a long-handled Japanese hoe was also difficult, as mud stuck to the hoe front. It was quite difficult to cover the seed, with crows and rooks waiting to pounce!

Work continued this week - fingers crossed for a good harvest next year!
